Meet the new Scheme Actuary

Lynda Whitney

Scheme Actuary – Aon

I am a Senior Partner at Aon with over 25 years’ experience and have been a Scheme Actuary for over 20 years. I am also a Trustee of the Pension Policy Institute, giving me a wide view on future pension developments.

My role is to help ensure the Fund’s financial health by assessing liabilities and advising the Trustee on the funding strategy. I will conduct actuarial valuations to determine the Fund’s financial position, calculate the Sponsor’s contribution rates, and assess risks related to future obligations. I am a key adviser to the Trustee, offering expert guidance on scheme factors and developing best practice.

While the Scheme Actuary role is personal, requiring individual accountability and expertise, I am supported by the same experienced team that worked with Mike Webb, my predecessor, who retired from Aon earlier this year.

Independence is crucial; I provide unbiased advice to protect the interests of the Fund’s members. My client is the Trustee of the Fund, rather than the Sponsor (Shell plc).

I have been impressed by the current condition of the Fund not only its financial strength, which reflects careful stewardship and long-term planning, but also, the calibre of the people involved, and the effectiveness of its governance systems.

My first actuarial valuation of the Fund will be as at 31 December 2026, where I will be working with the Trustee on how the new Funding Code will impact that valuation.
