What if I become ill?

Your Employing Company has the discretion to grant an immediate ill-health pension if you become ill or incapacitated, subject to supporting medical advice. The benefits available will depend on the severity of your illness and the section of the SCPF that you are member of. In the most serious ill-health cases, it may be possible to exchange all your pension benefits for an immediate one-off lump sum ('serious ill-health commutation').

What types of pension are possible if I am ill?

The pensions payable are Total Incapacity, Partial Incapacity and Serious Ill-Health.

You can read more on each type of pension in the SCPF Explanatory Booklet

When is a serious ill-health commutation allowed?

This is only possible if you have a medical condition where your life expectancy is less than one year. Full supporting medical information must be provided and then if your Employing Company and the Trustee agree, you can commute in accordance with HMRC rules. See the SCPF explanatory booklet for further details.
