Shell Pensioners Association

The Shell Pensioners Association (SPA) welcomes everyone who has a pension (or an entitlement to a deferred pension) from the Shell Contributory Pension Fund, the Shell Overseas Contributory Pension Fund or the UKSPP (Fidelity Scheme).

Who We Are

The Shell Pensioners Association is a mainly social group of ex Shell employees who would like to stay in touch with Shell and their former colleagues after leaving the company.

We also welcome and offer free membership to the partners of bereaved members who have taken over their late partner's pension(s).

Former Shell employees who have left the company but are not yet drawing their Shell pension (deferred pensioners) are also welcome to join.

Our History

The first steps towards setting up an association to represent the interests of all Shell pensioners in the UK were taken in November 1967. At the time the only pensioner groups were the Four Star Club (for members of 40 years’ service or more) and the Shell 25 Club (for members with 25 years’ service or more).

Mr E. Horwood, a Shell Centre Staff Council member was persuaded to call a meeting of those who may be interested in setting up a new pensioners’ association. He chaired a meeting on November 9th, 1967 where Mr Bill Lewis volunteered to become the first secretary of the SPA.

The inaugural meeting of the Shell Pensioners Association took place on 12th July, 1968 in Shell Centre and was attended by 331 people, about 40 of whom were women. The first SPA President was John Philip Berkin CBE.

Membership had grown to 1,656 members by the time of the first AGM in May 1969.

Over fifty years later, the SPA is still going strong with a membership of approx.18,500 members. The SPA magazine is more politically correct than it used to be but the indomitable character of the Shell pensioners still lives on!

Member Benefits

By joining SPA, you will receive special member-only benefits including access to our members only website, information about planned events, access to our Facebook group, a magazine three times a year, eligibility to join a local SPA branch and links to Third Party service providers offering discounts on products and services. You also have the right to call the Shell Pensioner Programme for advice and guidance on a range of subjects, and (as long as you are drawing a SCPF or SOCPF pension) you may apply for means-tested benevolence from the Shell Pensioners Benevolent Association.

These benefits start the day you join the SPA and are always being updated to serve our membership as best we can.

Membership is available to eligible persons as a one-off life-time payment.  There is no monthly or annual subscription.

Membership

Full SPA membership is currently available to eligible persons for a one-off payment of £10.

Special dispensation is given to the spouse or partner of a deceased member where they can join free of charge.

Persons eligible for membership but living outside the UK and the Crown Dependencies can join as an Associate Member for a one-off payment of £10. However they will not be able to vote in SPA AGMs or EGMs or benefit from SPBA benevolence.
